4 Alabama counties selected for pilot project

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Four Alabama counties — Lawrence, Jefferson, Marshall and Montgomery — have been selected as pilot sites for a new project aimed at developing more community corrections programs and sending fewer nonviolent offenders to prison.

The selections were announced by Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb and the Alabama Sentencing Commission.

Cobb says the Cooperative Community Alternative Sentencing Project should develop more effective treatment and intervention programs for nonviolent offenders. She says that should reduce the number of repeat offenders and make better use of limited public resources.
