100 state inmates in Mississippi prison
7/8/2003

The first 100 Alabama inmates arrived at a private prison in Tutwiler, Miss., Monday as part of a contract to help alleviate overcrowding in Alabama prisons.

Gov. Bob Riley and the Alabama Department of Corrections signed an emergency contract June 26 with Corrections Corp. of America to send about 1,400 male inmates to CCA's Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility.

The state is trying to comply with two court orders to end overcrowding -- one calling for removal of state prisoners from county jails and another ordering the state to reduce the number of inmates at Tutwiler Prison for women in Wetumpka.
